Asian Salad

Friends are fun.  Good food is fun.  The SAG awards are fun.  Put all three together, and you've got a lot of fun.

Last night, I got together with some friends at my friend Charlynn's house for soup, salad and SAGs!  It was a lot of fun.  We all brought a soup, salad, bread or sweet to share.  There was so much good food!  I brought asian salad and deep dark chocolate cookies!

Asian salad is a recipe that my mom's made for a long time.  It's super yummy and my mom said I could share the recipe with all of you!

What I love about this salad is that you can make it ahead of time!  Well, actually, you really need to make  it ahead of time.  Everything needs time to marinade.

First you need to crunch up a couple bags of ramen noodles and dump them in the bottom of a big bowl.  I think the ramen noodles might be my favorite part of the salad :)

Cover the noodle with a couple of bags of broccoli slaw, some sunflower seeds and some slivered almonds....

And then add some green onions...

I have a bit of a problem with onions.  I guess I'm just super sensitive.  They don't just make me cry.  They really make my eyes burn!  Even if the onions are in the next room.  So while chopping the green onions, my eyes started to burn really bad.  My mom remembered that at one point in the movie The Help, they mentioned that putting an unlit match between your teeth will help appease the onion burn.  I'm not sure if it worked, though, because we didn't really think to try this until after I chopped the onions.  I guess it took away the residual sting...

Now time for the dressing.  Take the two beef seasoning packets from your ramen noodles and mix it with sugar, oil and white vinegar.

Next, pour it all over the salad.

Now, this next part is really important: DO NOT STIR IT!  Put a lid on it, put it in the fridge, and ignore it for 4-24 hours.  Don't stir it until just before you serve it.

If I were smart, I would have remembered to take a picture once I stirred it.  But I'm not smart, so I didn't.  But trust me...It's a pretty salad! And it's pretty tasty too :)

Keep an eye out for a post about the deep dark chocolate cookies and pictures from SAGgy Girls night! :)

Asian Salad
  • 2 packages broccoli slaw
  • 2 packages beef flavored ramen noodles
  • 1 cup sliced almonds
  • 1 cup sunflower seed kernels
  • 1 bunch green onions, chopped
  • 1/3 cup white vinegar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup oil
  1. Break up your ramen noodle and dump them in the bottom of a large bowl.  Set the seasoning packets aside.
  2.  Add the broccoli slaw, almonds, sunflower kernels and green onions.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the seasoning packets from the ramen, vinegar, sugar and oil.  Whisk until thoroughly combined.
  4. Pour the dressing over the salad.  DO NOT STIR!  Cover the salad and put it in the refrigerator for 4 – 24 hours.
  5. Stir right before serving and enjoy!

Brain Dump

1.  This past week has to have been one of the most frustrating, stressful, emotional weeks of my life.  I have yelled, screamed, cried and cursed so much.  I'm so glad it's over and I'm optimistic that this coming week will be better.

2.  Five years after I started doing theatre at Baton Rouge Little Theater, I have FINALLY gotten all of my show posters framed and hung up on my wall.  The only poster missing is the poster from Evita, which I did in September 2009 (but I should be getting that one soon :D ).  It's nice to have all of these on the wall as a reminder of how far I've come and how much I really do have to be thankful for. (And lots of thanks to my mom and dad for helping me hang them!)

3.  Speaking of theatre, I'm going to be playing Tintinabula, one of the Courtesans, in Baton Rouge Little Theater's  upcoming production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.  I haven't done any theatre in over a year (and haven't done a musical in over 2 years!) so I'm excited to be involved again.  I'm sure you'll be hearing all about it in the coming weeks.  It opens on March 9.

4.  I had a lot of fun watching the SAG awards and eating soup and salad tonight with some friends.  I got to try a Pinterest recipe, which is always exciting!  Keep an eye out for a blog post with pictures and recipes. :)

5.  I need a new manicure.

6.  I'm getting a new ring this week.  I'm super excited :) The stone was given to me by a coworker of mine who is very special to me and my mom helped me pick out the setting.  Expect pictures.

7.  I'm starting to knit to decompress.  I found an old project that I started on a while back and am adding a few rows to it every night before I go to sleep.  It's going to be a hot pink scarf.  But it's not very good and I would never wear it, so I'm going to give it to my dog when it's done.  He needs a scarf on those Baton Rouge winter walks. :)

8.  I felt really sick on Friday, so I came home and watched The Office on Netflix in bed all day. Now, I can't stop watching until I've seen them all.  I personally think John Krasinski married the wrong Emily.  He totally meant to marry me, not Emily Blunt.

9.  I am really jealous of Emily Blunt.

10. I have almost completely cut caffeine out of my diet, which is a huge accomplishment for me.  I've been having some anxiety issues lately and all the doctors I've been to have recommended keeping caffeine to a minimum to help with those issues.  I was surprised at how little trouble I've had with it.  Every now and then I'll get a really bad caffeine headache and have to have a Diet Coke, but for the most part, I just switched to Caffeine Free Diet Coke with no problem.  And, surprise surprise, I've been sleeping a little better too.  It's been a nice transition.

11.  I had lunch with my mom and dad at Jimmy John's today.  Because I knew I'd be eating a lot tonight, I decided to try my regular Turkey Tom as an Unwich to cut back calories, meaning that, instead of using bread, the sandwich is wrapped in lettuce.  I was surprised at how good it was!  I mean, it's hard to beat the amazing bread that Jimmy John's has, but the Unwich was very satisfying and I can definitely see myself ordering it a lot more in the future!  AND it was only 273 calories.  The regular sandwich is 515 calories.  Not bad!

Yum!

12.   Albertson's makes the best donuts.  I think Krispy Kremes are too sweet.  I was somehow able to convince my parents to get a dozen last night and we split them.  So now there are 5 Albertson's Donuts in my kitchen and I have successfully avoided them all day.  I should reward my self control with a donut tomorrow morning :)

Night y'all!

How Pinteresting!

Hey guys! Remember when I said I was going to do one of these every Wednesday?  And then I just didn't...

Yeah, sorry about that...

I pinky promise that I will write a non-meme blog post very soon (these are just so much fun!), but in the mean time...

Monday Games

My friend Mel tagged me in this game a few days ago and it looks like fun!  I'm in one of those "I need to blog!" moods, but my Monday brain is rarely together enough to write a good post (It seems like I always use that excuse! haha).  So, here we go!

The Rules
1. You must post the rules.
2.  Post 11 fun facts about yourself on the blog post.
3.  Answer the questions the tagger set for you in the post, then create 11 new questions to ask the people you've tagged.
4.  Tag 11 people and link them on your post.
5.  Let them know you've tagged them!
*I'm actually going to skip these last two steps, seeing as I'm new to blogging and don't know 11 bloggers well enough to tag them!

11 Fun Facts About Me

1. I am extremely left handed. It's so bad.  I can't use regular scissors,  I can't write in binders or on chalkboards/white boards, and I can't use cutlery to save my life (whenever I try to use cutlery, I always end up pushing my plate to the right, which can be very annoying to any person sitting to the right of me.)

2.  I'm obsessed with food, but I hate to eat.  And I love to cook for others.

3.  I will get way more worked up from an animal getting hurt of dying in a movie than I will from human. (That scene from Up where Kevin gets bit by Alpha?  It kills me every time.)

4.  I secretly want to die my hair brown, but I never will because I'm afraid I'll hate it and never be able to get my natural color back.

5.  I'm a bit obsessive about my money.  I use Mint to track all of my expenses and accounts and I check it at least 5 or 6 times a day.  The numbers almost never change without my knowing, but I'm terrified that it's all going to just disappear or something.

6.  Once I start reading a good book, I can't stop.  But I have a lot of trouble finding the motivation to read.  I really need to read more often.  I know that once I start, I'll love it.  I just have a lot of trouble getting started.

7.  I absolutely, positively hate fruit.  The texture, the smell, the taste.  Yuck!

8.  I've been in 7 shows at Baton Rouge Little Theater, played a variety of characters and even won an award for one of my roles.  But without fail, the only show that people remember me for is The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

9.  I would really love to try photography, but I don't have the right camera.  I would love to buy a DSLR and take a photography class one day.  I'd also love to take a painting class and a pottery class.

10.  I'd also really love to take a blog design class one day (do those exist?)  I'd like to customize my blog and maybe even (eventually) buy a domain name, but I have no clue where to begin!

11.  The words I most commonly misuse when writing are Knew/New and Know/Now.  I know the difference and can use them properly when speaking a sentence, but I use the wrong word all the time when writing.  For example, you know the song Need You Now by Lady Antebellum?  It's in my iTunes as Need You Know.  It's been like that for months and I'm too lazy to change it.

Questions and Answers

1.  What are your biggest pet peeves, not including traffic issues?
People who walk around campus or stand right outside of the entrances to buildings smoking.  It drives me nuts when I'm walking through campus and I get stuck behind a smoker because it all ends up in my face! And there are some building that seem impossible to walk into without hitting a wall of smoke.  Thanks for the cancer, guys.

2.  If you could go on an all expenses paid vacation and take one person, who would you take and where would you go?
Well, I know who I would WANT to take.  *sigh* But as for the where, it's a tie between Disney World and England.  I would probably do Disney World though because it can get so expensive so easily.  If someone else is picking up the tab, Disney world could be really awesome.

3.  If you could do anything you wanted for your next birthday, what would you do? (Money is no object and everything is ok to eat)
I've haven't really been interested in parties or big to-dos for my birthday since early middle school.  But I would love to buy an iPad with the smart cover.  And maybe a shopping spree? :)

4.  What is your favorite play or musical?
Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim.  It's just wonderful.  And it's the show that made me want to try theater.

Mel apparently loves the number 4 so much that she gave me TWO #4s! :P
4.  What are some of your favorite girl names? Favorite boy names?
For a girl, I really love Charlotte Grace. Or Catherine Grace.  And Harper.  And Genevieve.  And Lucy.  And Lola.  And I have a whole list of other names that I love.
For a boy, I love Noah Thomas (but my brother says I'm not allowed to name my son Noah because he thought of it first. I say whoever pops a boy out first gets it :P )
I also like Milo, Finn, Luke and Logan for a boy.

5.  What is the biggest lesson you have learned in life?
It is ok to not be ok.

6.  What is your favorite recipe?
Probably the cabbage rolls my mom makes every year for New Years Day.  I don't have a link for it, sorry!

7.  What is the last book you read? Did you enjoy it?
A Friend Like Henry by Nuala Gardner.  I loved it!  It's about how having a dog really helped a boy with severe autism.

8.  Who is your favorite author or speaker?
I don't really have a favorite author or speaker.  But I've recently started listening to Ted Talks on my iPhone. They're these short (20 minutes max) speeches by all sorts of people on all sorts of topics and they're really interesting.  You can download the Ted Talks app on the iPhone for free.  My favorite so far has been a talk on what babies learn or can learn while they're still in the womb.

9. Which bloggie friends do you hope to meet in real life?
I've never communicated with her, but I would love to meet Katie from Marriage Confessions.  I love her blog and her kids are ADORABLE.

10.  What is your nervous habit?
Biting my nails.  I've discovered that really the only way to stop me from biting my nails is to keep them manicured, which starts to get a little pricey after a while.
I also subconsciously clench my jaw a lot and grind my teeth at night.  I have to sleep with a mouth guard in at night or else I'll destroy my teeth.

11.  What do you hope will happen (that could happen) in 2012?
.....No comment.

11 Questions for You!

1.  Besides wallet, keys, or phone, what is the one item that you absolutely cannot leave the house without?
2.  You're at the grocery story and are allowed to get one treat for yourself.  What is it?
3.  If money or stability wasn't an issue, what career would you like to have?
4.  Are you an early bird or a night owl?
5.  You have a chance to go to dinner with any celebrity/famous person, alive or dead.  Who is it and what restaurant do you go to?
6.  What is your favorite thing about your appearance? And what is your favorite thing about yourself as a whole?
7.  What is your absolute least favorite food?
8.  What is your favorite birthday memory from your childhood?
9.  What is your favorite font?
10. What do you do to wind down at the end of a long day?
11.  What is the air speed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Since I didn't tag anyone in the post, I'm inviting all of my reader to play this game!  I really would love to know your answers and 11 random things!  If you have a blog, do this on your blog and post a link to it in the comments for this post!  Or if you don't have a blog, just answer the questions or write your facts (or BOTH!) in the comments!  I love comments :D

All Together Now: "Awwww!"

Oh goodness, I love little babies so much!  And not just because they're incredibly adorable.

Babies are little sponges!  It's incredible how quickly they pick up sounds and actions from their environment and how quickly they grow and learn! I'm planning to do a blog post in the near future about what I'm in school for and what I plan to do with my degree, but I'll give you a hint:  It has to do with babies!  And I'm so excited!

I really can't wait to be a mom one day :)

TGIF!

This past week was my first week back at school.  I am so in love with all of my classes!  Well, at least I think I am.  We'll see how my Acoustics of Speech and Hearing class goes.  That one may be tricky—the word "physics" was mentioned today (never a good sign in my book!)  But other than that maybe, I really do love going to school.  But I have to say, I am exhausted tonight!  My class schedule isn't that heavy (only 14 hours this semester—up to this point I've been taking 17), but my body still thinks it's Winter break and doesn't want to wake up before 10 or go to sleep before midnight or 1.  This makes for a very sleepy Emily.  So TGIF!

To celebrate, how about a little....

If you want to participate, answer the questions on your own blog and link up here.

1.  Where do you hide the really good snacks?
I try really hard not to keep snacks around my apartment.  I generally don't snack that much, but if the mood strikes me and I have "snacky stuff" around, I will start snacking and won't be able to stop myself, so I've learned it's just best to not keep stuff around.  But when I do have really good snacks, I keep them (tightly sealed) in my bedside table.  Right now, I think I've got rice cakes, Lance crackers, and dark chocolate chips there, but I don't touch them much.  I'm more likely to grab a bowl of honey nut cheerios or make half a sandwich than reach under the bedside table.

2. Do you keep your vehicle clean?
I try really hard to keep my car clean.  I am really lucky to have the car that I have, so it's important for me that I take care of it and keep it clean.  Plus, I like to think of my car as a "decompression zone" of sorts.  Somedays, my commute to and from work/school is the only time that I can relax (not too much, of course!) without having to focus on school or obligations.  Just me and my XM radio.  But if my car is messy, it stresses me out.

That being said, there are usually one or two empty/partially empty diet coke cans in my car.

3. Have you ever been to Vegas?
No.  And normally I would have no desire to go to Las Vegas, but I love The Beatles and would love to see Cirque de Soleil's Love.

4.  Warm room/light blankets or cold room/warm snuggly blankets?
That's a really tough question for me!  But I think I'm going to go with cold room/warm snuggly blankets.  I hate the cold, but I think waking up in the middle of the night burning up is the worst.  At least you can add blankets when you're cold.

5. What is the worst flying/airplane experience you've ever had?
Oh my goodness...this is a long one.
I was 16 when Hurricane Gustav hit my humble town of Baton Rouge.  My neighborhood was hit pretty bad and we weren't projected to get power back for 21 days.  I stayed home with my parents for the first week.  Once they had to go back to work,  flew up to Charlotte, NC to visit my grandmother for a week because school wasn't supposed to start back up for at least another week and I didn't want to sit at home for a week staring at my toes with no electricity.  Unfortunately, the day I was supposed to fly back from Charlotte, Hurricane Ike made landfall in Louisiana and Texas.  I made it to Memphis for my connecting flight just fine, then boarded the plane to New Orleans, which took off and was expected to arrive on time.  But once we got to New Orleans, we hit really awful turbulence and couldn't land immediately because of wind shears.  We flew around in circles over New Orleans until our fuel got low enough that we either had to land or fly back to Memphis, so we headed back to Memphis.  Mean while, unbeknownst to me, my parents are on the phone with the airline frantically trying to get information about the flight and panicking because the airline is telling them my flight never even took off and that I must have "wandered out of the airport" because I wasn't responding to their pages (Yes, the airline LOST an entire flight of people).  We get back to Memphis and are told that we will have to get in line to try to get on the next and last flight to New Orleans.  Lucky for me, my parents pulled the "Unaccompanied Minor" card and got the airline to bump someone on the flight so I could get home.  So I went to the gate (which was located right across from a karaoke bar—What genius thought that an airport would be a good place for a karaoke bar?) and waited.  After a couple of hours, they page me at the gate desk, where I find a very annoyed looking airport employee asking me why I didn't answer any pages all afternoon.  She didn't quite know what to say when I told her that I couldn't answer pages when I'm 30,000 feet in the air.  But she took me to the room to UMs and told me that the flight to New Orleans most likely wouldn't be leaving and that I should probably fly back to Charlotte and try flying back after the storm passed.  So then she took me to the plane to Charlotte, where I had to get on before everyone else.  Once we landed in Charlotte, they wouldn't let me off the plane because I was a UM.  It took me about 15 minutes to convince the flight attendant that, yes, I was in fact competent enough to find my way out of an airport without any hand holding and would he please let me go before I lost my ever loving mind?
So, long story short, in the span of a day, I flew from Charlotte to Memphis, then to New Orleans, flew in circles over New Orleans for 45 minutes, then back to Memphis and back to Charlotte.
My gosh, just writing that makes me want to kick an airplane.

Blast From The Past

Guess who's back! Miss me? :)  I can't really say that I've sorted out my personal issues. But I've gotten to a place where I'm not letting them completely consume me.  I'm learning to live with them and be patient, which means back to blogging for me! I know you must be thrilled :P

In the time that I've been gone, I've "upgraded" my Facebook to timeline.  I'm still not sure what I think about it.  I actually really like the way it looks.  And it's convenient because it takes Facebook stalking to a whole new level of convenience (Kidding!...Kind of....)  But that means it makes it that much easier to Facebook stalk ME! If I had met 2007, 2008, 2009 Emily today, I would have driven myself crazy.  I can't help but cringe at some of the things I said when I was younger.

Thanks to this new timeline feature, I recently came across the notes section of my Facebook profile, which I had neglected since high school.  There, I found the gold mine of Self-Indulgent-High-School Emily.  I've done a couple of surveys on here, but I did them on Facebook all the time in high school.  Going back and reading these surveys felt weird.  Some of my responses made me cringe, some of them made me laugh, and some of them made me realize how much has changed in my life since high school.

Here, for your reading pleasure, are a few of my favorite survey questions and responses that I came across–Emily's Greatest Hits: High School Edition!

From 2009
What is your greatest hope/wish?
That I find my glasses.

Which of your friends lives closest to you?
Rodney, the friendly ghost.
Note: Rodney is the ghost of Baton Rouge Little Theater.

Someone knocks on your window at 2:00 a.m., who do you want it to be?
A Papa Johns delivery boy. Preferably a cute one. With pizza.

Would you rather be called 'baby' or 'hunny?'
"Baby." "Hunny" is what you get called in the McDonald's drive-thru.

Have you ever met someone who is incredible?
I only associate with incredible people.
That makes me sound like such a witch with a B, I know.

If the last person you kissed tried to kiss you again, would you start kissing them back?
I honestly don't know. Common sense would say "Slap them and demand answers. But, I'm not always a logical thinker."
I've come full circle.

Who was the first person to break your heart?
I'm lucky that I haven't have to deal with that yet. But it's bound to happen eventually.
This one makes me laugh a really bitter, cynical, I-really-want-to-cry kind of laugh.

Whats the closest thing to you that is red?
A coke can.
Actually I moved it so I wouldn't seem gluttonous.
Sooo, CDs.

Would you go out to eat with George W. Bush?
Yeah. He's rich! We'd probably go somewhere fancy and it would be soo rude of him not to pay.

 Are you too forgiving?
I'm either way too forgiving or way too stubborn
I still haven't figured out which one I am.

What are your plans for the day?
Spaghetti and Meatballs.

 What's your biggest secret?
I'm the one who cursed the Hope Diamond.

I'm fluent in Ubbi Dubbi. Remember? That secret language they had on the show Zoom? I totally mastered it.

I can still speak it :)

Do you want someone dead?
Necrophilia's not my style.

What would you do if someone smacked your butt?
Eh, I'm used to it.

When I wake up in the morning....
I curse the world. Then I pee.

Who was the last person you told a secret to?
I do theatre. I have no secrets.

What pisses you off a whole lot?
Rude audiences.

When is the last time you wanted to punch someone in their face?
After seeing Twilight.
I was Twilight obsessed in the second half of 2008.  Then I saw the movie...

 Favourite Drinks (list 3):
Caffeine.
Argh! I miss my caffeine.  I've had to cut it out lately :(

In single words (not sentences) describe your personality:
...I'm to sleepy to do that.
Oh! There's one!

Sleepy.

What’s your favourite Shakespeare play?
Much Ado About Nothing.

Sad, sad confession: I remember absolutely nothing about this play. Time to pull out my No fear Shakespeare, I guess?

Do you have empty alcohol bottles hidden anywhere?

10 Questions

You know the show "Inside the Actor's Studio?"  Sadly, I've never seen it.  It's not for lack of wanting, it's just that I really don't watch tv that often.  And when I do, I always seem to catch a "Storage Wars" marathon, and once "Storage Wars" is on, there's no turning it off.

Despite never having seen "Inside the Actor's Studio," I do know enough about it to know the 10 Questions that James Lipton asks.  And because my brain shut off as soon as I got home from work tonight, I am going to answer those questions here and pretend it's an adequate blog post.

Bubbles.

What is your least favorite word?
Goodbye.

What turns you on creatively, spiritually or emotionally?
Talent, Passion, A Sense of Humor

What turns you off?
Ego, Being Selfish, Short Tempers

What is your favorite curse word?
Sh** is what seems to come out most naturally.  But I'm trying really hard not to curse.

A Sad Day for Secrets

Dear friends-

We are gathered here today to mourn a great loss- the loss of the PostSecret iPhone app.

The fact that the app is gone makes me sad. The reason that the app had to be shut down makes me even more sad.   Long story short, the PostSecret app allowed user to anonymously share their secrets with other app users.  The app was wildly popular, with tens of thousands of secrets being posted everyday (some of which were mine).  Unfortunately, a few users with malicious intent started posting inappropriate, pornographic, gruesome, and, at times, even threatening content.  Despite these users only making up about 1% of the app users, the scale of the app was so massive that even this 1% was too much for the moderators to keep track of and keep a hold of.   A huge part of the app and of PostSecret as a whole is anonymity, which made it difficult (if not impossible) to block certain users from using the app.  As sad as I am to see the app close, I really do understand why Frank (the creator of the PostSecret project) had to shut it down.  It's upsetting how just a few people with bad intentions and an iPhone can bring down an entire community.  You can read Frank's statement about shutting the app down and see where PostSecret will continue to thrive here.

In memory of an app that I used like crazy over the past few months and sometimes turned to when I needed a little support or release, I've posted below some of my favorite secrets that I came across while using the app.  Some of them made me sad, some of them made me giggle, some of them made me hopeful,  some of them made me say, "Me too!",  some of them made me relieved, some of them made me angry and frustrated, some of them hit a little too close to home, and some of them I just liked, despite not really relating to them.  I could write an explanation of what I think of each secret, but I think I'd rather let them stand on their own.   They're the secrets of strangers. They don't need explanations.

The app may be closed, but it will live on through the PostSecret projects, in the hearts of the people who used it, and on my iPhone (because I can't bring myself to delete it yet).
